“The Age of Love,” a new award-winning documentary about senior citizens and speed dating, will be screened at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Clarice L. Buckman Theater at Quinnipiac University. This event is free and open to the public.
“The Age of Love” follows the humorous and poignant adventures of 30 senior citizens in Rochester, N.Y. who sign up for a first-of-its-kind speed dating event exclusively for 70-90 year olds. From anxious anticipation through the dates that follow, it’s an unexpected tale of intrepid seniors who lay their hearts on the line, and discover how dreams and desires change – or don’t change – from first love to the far reaches of life.
Born in the years before World War II, none of the 30 registrants for Rochester’s first senior speed dating event dreamt of being flung into the high-tech social scene of the new millennium. But now as posters go up, local media buzzes and anticipation grows, these typically overlooked seniors are spurred to confront the realities of physical appearance, romance and loneliness, loss and new beginnings.
The film takes viewers where no documentary has gone before – directly into the lives of older singles who still yearn to be seen and understood, who still desire another’s touch, who seek a new chance at love.
A winner of the Paley Center Doc Pitch Competition and awarded a Fledgling Fund grant for films that have the potential to change hearts and minds in American culture, “The Age of Love” began its festival run at Newport Beach, then screened at the AARP National Expo in Boston. With a goal of creating a national dialogue about our oldest generation, the production team plans a Valentine’s Day screening launch to include actual senior speed dating events in 25 markets.
A student panel will discuss the movie and dialogue with the audience following the screening at Quinnipiac. Seating is limited for the screening. To register, please visit www.quinnipiac.edu/ageoflove. For more information about the screening at Quinnipiac, please call 203-582-8652.
