Senator Len Fasano (R-North Haven), Senate President Martin M. Looney (D-New Haven) and Representative Dave Yaccarino (R- North Haven) celebrated today’s groundbreaking ceremony at the North Haven Middle School construction project with shovels in their hands. The middle school, located at 55 Bailey Road is undergoing a massive renovation and new construction to update the school and address multiple deficiencies.

“It’s very exciting to see this important construction project move forward,” said Sen. Fasano. “I want to thank Representative Dave Yaccarino and Senator Martin M. Looney for working with me to help secure the state funding needed to make this project a reality. I’m looking forward to watching the transformation begin and I thank the town for their efforts to give our deserving students the best school we can.”

“A renovated North Haven Middle School will provide students with an academic setting that will help them reach their full potential,” said Sen. Looney. “I want to thank Senator Fasano and Representative Yaccarino for their work in making the renovation a reality.”

“It’s definitely time for much needed updates, improvements and expansion of our beloved middle school,” said Rep. Yaccarino. “This comprehensive project will enable our school to meet the needs of our children and provide a learning environment that supports and nurtures every student as well as our wonderful teachers.”

Fasano, Looney and Yaccarino worked together to increase state funding for the project and secure an additional million dollars to further advance development.

The project involves renovating core portions of the existing building, demolishing certain existing classroom wings and adding a new two story academic wing. The construction will address multiple structural issues and out of date technology including: roof leaks, inadequate power, air quality complaints, heating system upgrades, smoke detector replacements, and updates to satisfy ADA requirements.

North Haven Middle School was constructed in 1960 and encompasses 140,613 square feet, excluding courtyard and canopies. The school was deemed “out of date and minimally adequate for a 21st century middle school,” according to the New England Association of Schools and Colleges report.

After considering the results of the report, the School Building Committee decided to renovate the existing building and add an addition to expand the current footprint of the space.
