North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda announced that construction of sidewalks on Skiff Street — from Van Rose Drive to Whitney Avenue — will move forward.

According to Freda, North Haven received $95,370 in Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant dollars through Connecticut’s Office of Policy and Management for sidewalk replacement and refurbishment on Skiff Street.

“We previously had applied for this grant and were very excited to learn of the award of this infrastructure project,” Freda said in a press-release distributed last week. “Further, there will be no outlay of capital dollars for the project by the Town of North Haven’s residents.”

“The new sidewalk proposed for both sides of Skiff Street from Van Rose Drive to Whitney Avenue will greatly benefit all residents who travel along this route daily, allowing for a safer commute to and from work or shopping” he added.

As part of this project, North Haven’s Department of Public Works has committed ‘work in kind services’ valued at $10,000 for the project. Public Works has been preparing bid specifications and drawings, and expects to advertise formally the project for bid in April, host a formal bid opening in May and commence with construction in June or July of this year.

The planned scope of work on Skiff Street includes construction stakeout, site preparation and demolition, removal of tree stumps, installation of sub base and concrete sidewalk, loam and seed, traffic protection and demobilization.

Further information on the Skiff Street sidewalk project is available by contacting Public Works at (203) 239-5321, extension 750.
