Cindy Kern of North Haven, director of the Quinnipiac University Science Teaching and Learning Center, recently visited Cairo American College in Egypt to facilitate an educational program on the Next Generation Science Standards.

The standards, which are nationally recognized, are focused on stimulating students’ interest and literacy in science through three-dimensional learning.

“The two-day professional learning experience brought together K-12 teachers to engage in a variety of science learning experience designed to introduce the Next Generation Science Standards,” Kern said. “The goal of my presentation was to give teachers the opportunity to better understand how the Next Generation Science Standards can enhance their teaching and enhance the science education experience of their student.”

Cairo American College, an international school in Egypt, enrolls more than 800 students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.

Kern, who joined the School of Education faculty at Quinnipiac in 2015, received her doctorate in science education from the University of Nevada, where she also earned a master’s degree in science education and a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and teaching.

Funded by Bristol-Myers Squibb, the Quinnipiac University Science Teaching and Learning Center features a network of scientists, engineers and educators who collaborate to advance the art of STEM education from kindergarten to the university level. The center hosts monthly workshops offering strategies to support pre-service and in-service teachers in the STEM field.
