NFL arbitrator Shyam Das to discuss sports arbitration April 1 at QU School of Law Center

Shyam Das, a full-time labor arbitrator for 40 years, will discuss sports arbitration, drawing on his experience as an arbitrator for Major League Baseball and the National Football League, when he presents at the next Quinnipiac-Yale Dispute Resolution Workshop from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 1, at the Quinnipiac University School of Law Center.

Shyam Das, a full-time labor arbitrator for 40 years, will discuss sports arbitration, drawing on his experience as an arbitrator for Major League Baseball and the National Football League, when he presents at the next Quinnipiac-Yale Dispute Resolution Workshop from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 1, in the Lynne L. Pantalena Law Library, Room 221, at the Quinnipiac University School of Law Center, 370 Bassett Road.

Das will discuss the role of arbitration in professional sports in the United States, differences in MLB and NFL arbitration procedures, the extent to which sports arbitration differs from arbitration in other collective bargaining relationships and some of his more memorable cases.

Das currently serves as chair of the U.S. Steel and USW Board of Arbitration and is a national arbitrator for the U.S. Postal Service and its major unions. Das served as the grievance arbitrator for Major League Baseball and MLB Players Association from 1999 to 2012. He has been an arbitrator for the National Football League and NFL Players Association since 2004. He was president of the National Academy of Arbitrators in 2014-15 and was inducted as a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers in 2005.

Das is a graduate of Harvard College, the University of Chicago and Yale Law School. Prior to becoming a full-time arbitrator, he worked briefly as a lawyer in New York City, and then taught law at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

The Quinnipiac-Yale Dispute Resolution Workshop series features nationally recognized scholars and practitioners. The talks are open to the public as well as the Yale and Quinnipiac communities and are structured to allow time for questions and discussion.
